How much should you spend submitting your tracks via Music Xray? As little as possible.

That’s right. I don’t think you should spend any more than it absolutely takes to achieve your goals (land the sort of deals you’re pursing). The shorter we can make the path and the more we can reduce costs, the more invaluable Music Xray will be to our community of musicians. Ultimately, we care most about building the best set of tools we possibly can.

So, I want to be clear about this. You should not spend a penny more than the value Music Xray provides to your career.

As you know, each time one of your tracks has been rated by five industry professionals (which requires that you submit the track at least five times) we show you the average of the ratings. We don’t delay showing you the ratings as part of some strategy to get you to submit each song five times. It’s just that the average of any number of ratings below five is not statistically significant and doesn’t provide reliable information.

We can’t show you each individual rating. If we did, the ratings would be less sincere because the professionals who rate the songs would know that their individual ratings are public. As much as we’d like that fact to not influence the scores, it does.

So, here’s the thing: we’ve been collecting song ratings from industry professionals for years and we reflect those results back to the community of professionals. More on how that works here. We simply decided that it might be useful to you if we showed those ratings to you.
So, we worked out a way that we could do that without singling out any individual professional who rated a song. We don’t charge you anything additional to see the ratings. Consider it a bit of a bonus.

But then we realized that the ratings themselves are predictive in nature. That is, we can observe that most songs that receive high ratings do end up landing the type of deal they’re pursuing sooner or later. Often, it’s just a matter of persistence and having a good submissions strategy – which most often just means not submitting to opportunities that aren’t a good fit for your music. I don’t think anyone should submit solely for the purpose of acquiring a rating (unless you’re submitting specifically to get some career coaching or a song critique – in which case, getting the feedback is the whole purpose of the submission).

Given that the scores are predictive, we realized that one of the best ways to use Music Xray is to actually submit all the music you have to as many opportunities as it takes to accumulate five ratings for each song. In the process, you may get a deal for a few of those songs right away. It happens all the time. But if not, you can use the ratings you get back to decide which songs you want to continue submitting and which songs are probably not worthy of your continued investment.

Either way, you and your team have to decide how much you should invest in getting your career to the next level. At what point is it not worth it? You also music consider the fact that every deal you don’t land, someone else does. Competition is tough and in order to not be out-competed in the new music business, you have to use tools, like those provided by Music Xray, in a way that increases your chances and gives you an edge.

10 Social Media Mistakes Small Businesses Can Avoid

Social media sites allow us to connect quickly and stay connected to people and brands faster than ever before, which means we form closer relationships and have quick access to new people and opportunities. Most small businesses know it’s important to use social media, but they often make critical, costly mistakes when setting up their social media strategy. Here are the top 10 social media mistakes small business make and how to avoid them.

Mistake No. 1: Not Having a Plan

Even though many social media applications are free, they still cost small businesses time – and time equals money. To avoid wasting valuable time and money, start by putting together a social media marketing plan. Ask yourself what you hope to achieve from social media and how you plan to get there. Determine the amount of time and resources you are willing to devote to the program. Once you have a plan in place, it will be easier to focus on achieving the results you want.

Mistake No. 2: Too Much Too Soon

After establishing a plan, often small business owners jump into all aspects of the social space at once. This can be a huge mistake because it’s easy to get overwhelmed very quickly. Not all social networks make sense for every business or business owner. Do some research to determine which platforms best fit your business goals. What sites are your competitors and customers on? Consider starting with a platform you are familiar with and that you already have established network on.

Mistake No. 3: Not Measuring Your Success and Return on Investment

As a small business, you have limited time and resources, so it’s important to measure every aspect of your business to be sure it’s worth the investment. A social media program is no exception. Make sure you set goals for your program and that you have ways to monitor these. Most social media applications have some type of analytics associated with their platforms, as well as help sections that explain how to use the tools.

Mistake No. 4: Underutilizing Social Platforms for Branding

Every social media platform includes multiple fields for businesses to insert their brand messages and images. Many small business owners will leave multiple fields on their profiles blank. This is a big mistake. Your company information, logo, and any other links or images on your profile are the sales tools you have to pique a potential customer’s interest in your business. If your profile is half complete it reflects poorly on your company. Plus, the more complete the information is on your social profile, the more likely you are to be found in search results.

Mistake No. 5: Promoting Without Listening or Engaging

Have you ever been to a party and met someone who constantly talked about themselves? It’s a real turn off. Social media is very similar; if you constantly talk about your business and what your business offers without listening or engaging with others, your network will fall flat. Don’t be afraid to jump into conversations with new people or to ask questions. Likewise, if someone asks you a question or makes a comment to you, make sure you respond.

Mistake No. 6: Not Addressing Negative Comments or Feedback

Occasionally, business owners will have disgruntled customers and clients who post negative messages about their business or services. The initial reaction is to immediately delete the post. Do not do this! Social media is based upon transparency and authenticity. When you delete a post, you indicate to others that you are uncomfortable with what your brand is doing or represents. Instead of deleting the post, face it head-on and fully address the concern. Dealing with it will earn you more brand loyalty than you had before. Remember, these are the people who essentially pay your bills; if you believe in your product and service; you have nothing to hide from them.

Mistake No. 7: Not Claiming Existing Profiles

Did you know that a lot of your company information is a matter of public record? This means that regardless if you want to be involved socially or not, your company might already be. Services such as Google Places and Yelp may list information about your company whether you’ve created a profile or not. Don’t feel violated or angry; use this as an opportunity to expand your Web presence. All of these services give you the option to control what’s shown about your company and how it’s shown. Claim all of the profiles that mention your company and update the information. Be consistent on each network so the same information is listed.

Mistake No. 8: Skimping on Time

Building an online presence takes time. If you are truly interested in expanding your network online, you need to be prepared to put in the time. For your social media marketing plan to succeed, it’s crucial that you consistently interact online; even if it’s just 10 minutes a day. If you can’t put in the time, it’s best not to start.

Mistake No. 9: Lacking Passion

Social media marketing requires passion to be successful. As the owner, you know your brand better than anyone else, but if you aren’t passionate about interacting online, your social media efforts won’t work. If you have the resources, consider having one of your employees or an intern run the program. Social media can make a big impact on your business, but (like anything) you need to have a certain level of interest and passion to make it successful.

Mistake No. 10: Not Knowing When Social Media Isn’t Right for Your Business

Just because lots of businesses are using social, doesn’t mean you have to. For many small businesses, social media isn’t the right outlet, and you can waste a lot of time on it. If you decide social isn’t your forte, that’s fine. At the very least, make sure you heed the advice in Mistake No. 7.
Social media marketing can do amazing things for small businesses, but only if it is utilized properly. Whether you like it or not, your brand is online, so even if you aren’t ready to create a full social media program, you should at the very least make sure you take control of sites you are already listed on.

Can You Predict A Hit? The 21st Century A&R Answer

On Saturday October 1st, Bob Lefsetz asked this question in his post located here.
I have dedicated the past 10 years (of my 20 in this business) to precisely this question – or as I ask it now, “How can we make the A&R process more efficient and more accurate?”

On this subject – the data-driven question of “can you predict a hit” – I’ve put in my 10,000 hours and then some. Speaking of which, here’s an excerpt from Malcolm Gladwell’s article on my work in this field from The New Yorker (October 2006). Here’s me discussing this type of work with Gladwell at the New Yorker Conference in 2007. Here’s an sinopsis of an episode of the CBS series Numb3rs that used our research and technology as inspiration for their entire story line (if you only check out one of these links, check out that one). Lastly, this is a link to the Harvard Business School case study done on our work in this field.

I could go on. The work has been featured in numerous documentaries from BBC to Discovery to NatGeo and so on…

In 2001, I joined forces with a smart, family-owned software company outside Barcelona, Spain that had come up with a technology (at the time it was cutting-edge) that could analyze the acoustic properties and underlying mathematical patterns in music. Together, we started a company called Polyphonic HMI and began trying to sell a music recommendation system to music retailers. Digital retail did not exist so we were trying to sell it to Best Buy, Tower, Sam Goody etc. Our only true competition was a small start-up called Savage Beast from Silicon Valley. They were using people to classify songs instead of computers, however.

We were both too early to market and we both nearly went bankrupt. Savage Beast went back to the drawing board, changed their name to Pandora and the rest is history. We went back to the drawing board and came up with a service called Hit Song Science. We realized that making a prediction about the music someone would likely enjoy based upon their favorite songs was only slightly different than making a prediction about what music an entire market would enjoy based upon what it had proven to enjoy in the past – i.e. hit songs.

After months of fine-tuning, the technology worked pretty well when used properly. It had its limitations but if you took those into account, you could glean some really good data that really helped choose the single on an album that would likely encounter the least market resistance when promoted on par with all the other singles being promoted contemporaneously.

In short, we determined, within reasonable margins of error, that most hit songs (even in brand new genres) conform to predictablepatterns – concrete combinations of melody, harmony, beat, tempo, rhythm, octave, pitch, chord progression, fullness of sound, cadence, sonic brilliance etc. Songs that sound like hits to the human ear but that do not match one of the common “hit song patterns” face much steeper market resistance than those that do. I recognize there is much additional data that could be observed (as per Lefsetz’ post) but this is where we started.

A few labels embraced the service and tried to use it as we’d intended. We built up a nice little consulting business but it was nothing that was ever going to explode into a mass-scale sort of endeavor. In his book about WMG, Stan Cornyn remarked that in the race to adopt new technology, the music industry finishes just ahead of the Amish.

While that may be an exaggerated truth, I’m sure I had my shortcomings when it came to evangelizing Hit Song Science. So, I lay no blame with the market. But most frustrating was that so many labels, instead of working with us to try to harness the power of the technology to improve their business, would either spend time trying to disprove it worked by “tricking” the technology (not hard to do) or to use our reports to cover their asses – using them in internal meetings when our reports supported what they already believed or hiding them in a drawer when they did not. Rarely were we able to show a significant impact on a label’s bottom line after consistent use of Hit Song Science over time. The technology was rarely used to help make business and promotion decisions.

Yes, we should have just started our own label, yada yada, but we weren’t able to raise that kind of capital at the time and we weren’t that kind of company. All of that is covered in the HBS case study so I won’t re-hash it here.

In late 2005, I left Polyphonic HMI and in 2006 I co-founded Music Xray. Music Xray, while not sold as a technology service is a continuation of my vision for improving the efficiency and accuracy of the A&R process. Music Xray is an online A&R platform – currently the ONLY online platform specialized in A&R.

We called it Music Xray because we wanted to make the point that any kind of skill-enhancing technology is just a tool. Hit SongScience was never trying to replace human ears and ten-thousand-hour-earned gut instinct with a computer. Music Xray, like the medical x-ray, is just a tool that helps professionals make better decisions by adding never-before available data to the process. The medical x-ray doesn’t replace the doctor but few of us would consider visiting a doctor who refuses to use an x-ray machine when appropriate. Not using the best available data in the music business could also be considered malpractice but since lives are not on the line (just livelihoods and careers) there is no external pressure in our industry to adopt these kinds of best-practices. In fact, there is more industry-recognized glory when you can attribute success to elusive golden ears and gut instinct - much like the mystique surrounding a professional athlete.

Only when not using empirical data creates a competitive disadvantage do we see mass-adoption.

To that end, when we finally built a service and a business model that aligns with the clear self interests of all the parties (musicians and music industry professionals) it works remarkably well and today, Music Xray is becoming widely used – although a bit still under the radar.

We call Music Xray a 21st century A&R platform. It is free for music industry professionals to use. The small fees we charge musicians to have their music considered for deals achieves results they could not achieve at any price, in most cases, and it saves months of work and thousands of dollars for those few musicians who actually could achieve the results on their own. In fact, in the past 6 months alone, Music Xray has helped musicians place (and the industry find) over 3500 songs and acts to be used in commercial and exposure deals. These include major and indie label signings, songs placed in major motion pictures, network and cable TV series etc. We get daily love letters from both industry professionals and musician users. It’s very rewarding and the company is growing robustly (whew!).

I believe that as long as commercial and exposure opportunities for music exist, there will be human gatekeepers making decisions regarding which songs and acts are chosen. They will use data-driven tools to help make the decisions and Music Xray seeks to provide some of the best decision-making tools that enhance golden ears and gut instinct. To use a NASCAR metaphor, we build the best race car; one that enhances a driver’s natural talent and skill and we make the race car available for free. It’s a no-brainer to take it for a test drive if A&R is part of your business.

As an A&R platform, Music Xray is now used by over 1300 industry professionals and organizations including major labels, MTV, dozens of independent labels, publishers, radio stations, producers and even a few influential music bloggers. Some of our tools include an unique song-to-opportunity matching system and the ability for professionals to harness each others’ ears and expertise: like crowd-sourcing – except the crowd is formed by individuals who make their living with their ears. We continue to roll-out data-driven tools that help professionals find the highest potential songs and acts to fit each unique opportunity (not just finding hit singles).

A by-product of this system is that we observe (and share the data back to our community) each touch-point between the professionals and songs and acts on the platform. Each day we can identify numerous songs and acts that have been evaluated favorably by multiple A&R professionals but that remain available. In short, all the professionals can observe what’s “trending” among their industry peers. That is something that never before has been possible to know. This comes after the Atlanta rapper spent nearly 10 months in federal prison on a probation violation for drug charges.
On Wednesday, rapper Future’s “Magic” track featuring T.I. hit the Internet, marking Tip’s first official released verse since being released from prison.

If you made it to this verse and still have more lyrics in you, then you probably know these are from one of the first hip-hop, or rap, songs ever recorded -- "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang. You might remember the song from when it first hit the airways sprinting toward gold, or maybe you're flashing to a little old lady in the Adam Sandler movie, "The Wedding Singer." While it's true that in October 1979 this was the first hip-hop song to garner gold, it by no means represents the beginning of hip-hop.
Another thing to clear up is this: If you think hip-hop and rap are synonymous, you're a little off the mark. While it's accurate to say that rap is hip-hop, it's not entirely accurate to say that hip-hop is rap. Hip-hop is a cultural movement akin to Art Deco and the Harlem Renaissance, and, much like these movements, it incorporates several elements. Most hip-hop historians speak of four elements of hip-hop: tagging (graffiti), b-boying (break dancing), emceeing (MCing) and rapping. One of the visual elements -- graffiti -- technically came first, but at that time it wasn't part of hip-hop culture because hip-hop didn't exist. DJing and MCing (and eventually rapping) started the hip-hop movement, with dance and style following closely thereafter.
If you look at the movement from its beginnings up to today, you'll see that these elements have expanded into broader terms:

Visual art, which includes graffiti as well as other graphic arts and film
The written and spoken word, which includes MCing, rapping and performance poetry
Physical movement, which includes a variety of hip-hop dance styles
Style, which includes clothing and other objects of fashion

Lyrics aren't the only words of the hip-hop movement. Poetry has also found a home in hip-hop, by way of spoken word -- the process of reciting original poetry or the work of another in front of a group or audience. It should be noted that performance poetry isn't confined to the realm of hip-hop, but it has steadily been gaining footing within the movement for many years. If you've seen an episode of Russell Simmons' HBO TV series, Def Poetry Jam, which premiered in 2002, then you know what it is. A number of noted poets and celebrities have appeared on the show, including Amiri Baraka, Ani DiFranco, DMX, George Clinton, Erykah Badu, Kanye West, KRS-One, Lou Reed, Nikki Giovanni, Smokey Robinson, Sonia Sanchez and Wyclef Jean.

In this article, we'll take a closer look at each of the elements of hip hop. But first, let's go back -- way back -- and explore the beginnings of this 30-year-old movement.

Music loops consist of short melodies or beats that an artist can repeat for any desired number of measures. A single loop commonly spans the length of four to sixteen beats, but it can be longer as well. As an example of practical usage, hip-hop artists commonly use repeating loops to provide a melodic accompaniment to their raps, but you can create your own loops at home for use in your personal music projects.

  Open a digital multi-tracking program on your home computer or laptop. If you don't have this type of software, you can purchase or download a program to meet your needs (see Resources). When the software opens, create a new song file by clicking "File" and then "New" on the menu bar.

  Connect an audio interface to your PC or laptop by plugging the cable into the appropriate port (usually USB or FireWire, depending on the model). This will allow you to connect your instrument(s) without the need for a specialized sound card. If you prefer to use a MIDI instrument to control virtual synthesizers on your software of choice, use a MIDI interface rather than a standard interface.

  Plug your instrument(s) into the interface. Guitars and keyboards plug into 1/4" instrument jacks, vocal microphones typically plug into the three-prong XLR jacks, and MIDI cables plug into the "MIDI In" jack for input transfer (and into the "MIDI Out" jack on the instrument itself).

  Click the "Tempo" indicator, usually appearing near the "Record," "Play" and other command buttons on your software window, and select a tempo for your loop. If you want to record a slow loop, set the indicator between 80 and 110 beats per minute. For mid tempo loops, set the indicator between 110 and 140 beats per minute. For fast loops, set the indicator above 140.

  Click the title of any blank track on your software window. These should appear from the top to the bottom of your screen like a stack of long, rectangular boxes, with numbers and titles in the left column. Each track representing a recording area. If your program contains MIDI compatibility, you should see two types of tracks: Audio and MIDI. Select an audio track if using traditional instruments, or a MIDI track if using a digital connection.

  Click the "Record" button and play your melody with your instrument of choice. When you finish your loop, press "Stop." If recording with a MIDI source, click the track settings before you begin recording, and choose an electronic instrument for playback. If your track settings do not appear directly on the screen, double-click the track title to access related information.

  Click a second track and record an additional layer of music. If recording a simple guitar loop or piano melody, you may only need to use one track, but if you want to record a more multilayered loop, with keyboards, bass and percussion for example, you should record each part on a separate track. As long as each recording begins at 0 on the time line (your numeric time line appears horizontally along the top of your software window) and you follow the beat by listening to the ticking metronome while you record, each part will play together in perfect time.

  Save your project. If using Windows, press the "CTRL" and "S" keys together to save, and then use the pop-up "Save" window to select an audio format, such as WAV or MP3. If using a Mac, save by pressing the "COMMAND" and "S" keys together.

Lil Wayne made a triumphant return to the stage for his first tour in over a year. Hip-hop’s martian landed his spaceship at Providence, Rhode Island’s Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Wednesday (March 16) for the initial stop on his “I Am Music II” tour. Supporting acts Travis Barker and Rick Ross took the stage first before throwing it to hip-hop’s reigning crew.

Wearing skinny jeans, sunglasses, and a backwards hat, Wayne was welcomed by loud applause and cheers as he breezed through crowd favorites such as “A Milli,” “Right Above It,” and “Got Money.”

Midway through his set, he passed the mic to his protégé Nicki Minaj, who entered to “Roman’s Revenge” in a tight white and pink bodysuit, furry pink heels, and a blonde monster ‘do. She tackled her Pink Friday hits and popular guest verses while sporting football shoulder pads, pulling out a naughty toy during “Did It On’em” and giving one lucky male fan a lap dance he won’t forget.

Weezy returned to cap the night with the rest of his YMCMB crew, including Birdman, Lil Twist, and Mack Maine, closing with his Carter IV single “6 Foot 7 Foot” featuring Cory Gunz.

“Best nite of my life dot com. Providence was amaaaazzingggg…..boston was in the bldng!!!! thank u guys sooooo much!!!!! Mmmmuuuaaahhh!!!” tweeted an overwhelmed Nicki after her first show.

Working with music producers is an important part of an artist's career.

As the landscape of the music industry shifts toward a more independent approach for artists wishing to build a career in music, you may often find yourself working with several different music producers to record your songs. Producers are an important part of your career; they can help shape your sound, encourage your best performance and may assist you by introducing you to their connections within the music industry. However, it's important to protect your work and your interests as an artist at all times, to maximize earnings and avoid future conflict.

Copyright your work by registering it with the U.S. Copyright Office. Or mail a copy of the recording and/or sheet music to yourself, leaving the package sealed. The date on the postmark will prove when you created the song.
Research the producer's previous work. Ask to hear recordings of other artists she has worked with, and try to talk to some of the producer's previous clients. Find out how open to the collaborative process the producer is, whether she has any useful contacts within the music or publishing industry, and if the artist felt the producer was sympathetic to his artistic vision.
Establish how the producer will be paid for his work. He may want to charge a set fee for the entire project or a daily rate for the work he does. Or he may decide to work with you for free in return for "points," or a share of royalties you earn.
Discuss whether the producer will be writing the songs with you. You might want her help in a song-writing capacity, or you may simply want her to record an arrangement of it.
Determine a deadline for the work to be finished. This is particularly important if you are paying your producer a daily rate. If your project has no clear end point, such as when you and the producer are co-writing songs, decide how long you will work together.
Create and sign an agreement between you and the music producer, outlining the details of your arrangement, including fees, what (if any) royalties are being offered, and who will be credited as the author(s) of the final work.

Tips & Warnings

Ask other artists for advice on which producers to approach and which to avoid.
Do not sign anything the producer offers you without first having it checked by a qualified entertainment lawyer.

Hardware-based or software-based drum machines can be used to make beats for remixing.

Remixing is the art of taking a song and moving parts around, adding and subtracting parts, and adding effects to or warping the original arrangements. One of the key aspects of remixing a song is creating drumbeats, one of the most noticeable elements that can be used to completely change the overall feel of the piece. Though the imagination of the artist is the absolute tool for getting the job done, choosing the tools for bringing your ideas to reality comes down to a simple question: Do you want to create them using hardware, software, or both?

Things You'll Need:

Drum machine
Recording software
Digital synthesizer software

Find the tempo, or beats per minute, of the original song you are attempting to remix. This will allow you to create rhythms that match up accordingly when laying parts of the original material over them. If you have received the original source tracks, the individual instrument recordings for the song from the artist with the intent of remixing, the tempo should be provided in an attached document.If you cannot find the original tempo, you may have to make adjustments. Recording programs such as Sony Acid Pro and Pro Tools can "beatmap" the master tracks, which will determine an estimated tempo and adjust the recording to it. If this isn't an option for you, you can still create beats, but you will have to use your ears to stretch them out to match the desired speed.
Create the drumbeats using a hardware drum machine. External drum stations provide a variety of drum sounds, can be used to make and sequence loops, and can also be connected to a computer via a MIDI port to control digital drum machines. Boss, Roland and Akai as well as other companies sell quality drum machines for between $200 and $600. They can also be purchased used at a significantly lower cost.
Use a software synthesizer program not only to create drumbeats, but also to implement other sound effects or sample beats that were recorded live. This is a great option if you are sampling drums from the original recording. Programs like Propellerhead, Reason and FL Studio will read WAV files, a common format for uncompressed audio, and will let you use the files as samples in their numerous synthesizer and drum machine applications. They can also be synced to live recording software in something called "ReWire Mode." So if you want to create an entire production with them and then add live guitars, vocals or other instruments to your remix, you can do that as well.

(AllHipHop News) BET Networks will debut its first ever original music documentary when My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women and Hip-Hop, premieres later this month.

The documentary, which was directed by Ava DuVernay centered around the impact women have had on the genre of Hip-Hop, since its inception in the early 1970's.

Mc Lyte, Yo Yo, Rah Digga, Eve, Missy Elliot, Trina, Jermaine Dupri, Russell Simmons, Kevin Liles, ?uestlove, and a variety of rappers, executives and journalists are featured in My Mic Sounds Nice.

“This is a story that could not be told by one voice. It required a chorus. And although this story is comprehensive, it is still likely one of many truths about the role of women in hip-hop” Stephen Hill, President of Music Programming and Specials, told AllHipHop.com.

In related news, Mike Epps has been tapped to host the fifth annual BET Hip-Hop Awards, when the show returns October 16th.

The Good Doctor talks to VIBE about the hold-ups on "Detox" and the leak of the unfinished version of the Jay-Z assisted single "Under Pressure."

After a decade in limbo, fans surely have questions as to whether Dr. Dre will ever deliver his highly anticipated third solo album Detox. Now, in writer Jerry L. Barrow's interview with Dr. Dre for VIBE's upcoming fifteenth anniversary Juice issue, the legendary producer hopes to dispel the public doubts about the project. According to Dre, his work producing for other artists and signing talent to his Aftermath imprint have prevented him from completing the final project.
"I thought [making Detox] would take at worst case a couple of years," he said. "For example, actual work time on The Chronic was nine months and actual work time on my last album, 2001, was about 10 months. The actual work time on this album is about half of that, where I’m seriously focusing on it. There is always something coming up. Like signing talent, old and new."
Dr. Dre also discussed the numerous leaked reference tracks off of Detox, including the Jay-Z-assisted single "Under Pressure." He says that many of the reference tracks were the result of an email hack. Although he doesn't blame fans for going to such desperate measures to hear his new music, he is upset that "Under Pressure" leaked in such an unfinished form, lacking even a hook.
"Somebody actually hacked into our emails, so that made our red flags go up," he said. "We’re in a new age and that’s a sign: Wake up motherfucker. You have to be more careful with your shit. That’s all there is to it. I know what’s up now."
He also added, "[The 'Under Pressure' leak] was a little bit more frustrating because at least [Eminem's] 'Crack a Bottle' had a hook on it. I wouldn’t be as mad at a leak if the song was done...I’m not mad at the fans. I’m mad at the person that leaked the shit. I have no idea how it got out. It’s not even worth looking to see who did it. It happens. The most painful part about it is that I’m passionate about what I do so people should hear it in the right form."

With Drake’s abundance of pre album hype he had to serve up something good on his studio debut to keep his influx of fans at bay. With celeb appearances and hot producers Drake held his own on “Thank Me Later.”

As for Big Boi, it took him three years to get “Sir Lucious Left Foot” completed and out to the fans and many say it was worth the wait. With clever word play and a fusion of funky beats, Big Boi showed fans what makes him different from the rest.

The Roots are a long standing hip hop group and their undeniable talent was once again displayed on this album. “How I Got Over” a the perfect balance of a classic Roots album conscious and and super creative.

Almost immediately after he finished a jail bid for gun charges in March, T.I. set out to reclaim his status as a hip-hop king — hitting the mixtape circuit and huddling in the studio with Lady Gaga and Swizz Beatz. But that doesn't mean jail wasn't a serious setback.
"It did make me worse in a sense. ... Putting me in prison took me off [a positive] path a little bit, and now I'm working to get back on that path — or at least back on the path to the extent that I was before I went in," T.I. told Complex magazine. Before heading to jail, T.I. was serving part of his sentence by counseling at-risk kids and notched over 200 speaking engagements warning young people about violence on the MTV show "Road to Redemption."
T.I., who is on the cover of the magazine's August/September issue, says that the jail atmosphere definitely took its toll. "I lost a little bit of my positive focus during that period of incarceration. Being in that environment and having those daily surroundings, it's going to affect you."
One result was that he actually tuned out when it came to music. "I didn't listen much to records when I was in there. Music is what I do every day. That made me more homesick than anything," he said. Instead, T.I. logged lots of TV hours to pass the time. "I watched series like 'Sons of Anarchy.' I'm a fan. It's another form of 'The Sopranos' to me. I watched football and ESPN." But, the most popular show on the cellblock — "True Blood" — held no appeal for him.
"I couldn't really [watch it]. They got into that sh-- heavy," T.I. said. "The whole prison damn near shut down. Everybody left off the yard, like, ' "True Blood" coming on!' They went crazy for it — there's a bunch of sex in it, so they were tuning in for that."
